U.S. Seeks to Expand Economic Partnership with Cambodia, Supports Peace Along Thailand Border

PHNOM PENH, 19 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Washington on February 20 to discuss strengthening bilateral economic ties and efforts to maintain peace along the Cambodia–Thailand border. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the inaugural Board of Peace session.

Landau thanked Cambodia for joining as a founding member of the Board and praised Hun Manet’s participation. He also recalled U.S. support in easing tensions with Thailand, stressing Washington’s commitment to lasting peace in the region.

On bilateral relations, the Deputy Secretary highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade and economic sectors, noting Cambodia’s recent purchase of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for its national airline as a sign of rapid socio-economic progress.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed appreciation for U.S. backing in Cambodia’s post-conflict development and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to resolving border issues peacefully, in line with international law and bilateral agreements. He requested continued U.S. support for the peace process.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in security, defence, cross-border crime prevention, and regional frameworks. The meeting underscored shared interests in promoting stability, economic growth, and constructive engagement.
