Xi Urges Cambodia and Thailand to Rebuild Trust, Says Dialogue Key to Long‑Term Stability

SHANGHAI, July 20, 2026 (KPT) – Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on Cambodia and Thailand to consolidate their ceasefire and gradually rebuild mutual trust, saying this would serve the long‑term interests of both countries.
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Shanghai on Monday, where the Cambodian leader was attending the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High‑Level Meeting on Global AI Governance as part of a working visit to China.
According to Chinese state media, Xi said China supported efforts by Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their border dispute through dialogue and negotiations.
“China supports the two sides in finding a solution through dialogue and negotiation, and stands ready to continue its positive role in this regard,” he said.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet briefed Xi on the latest developments in the dispute and thanked China for its active engagement in promoting dialogue, reducing tensions, supporting the ceasefire and efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement.
He also expressed appreciation for China’s humanitarian assistance to civilians displaced by the conflict.
Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin announced Beijing would provide emergency humanitarian aid worth 20 million yuan, or about US$2.8 million, to support those affected by the border clashes.
The meeting underscored China’s role as a key stakeholder in regional stability, with Xi positioning dialogue and trust‑building as essential to securing peace and long‑term cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand.
