PHNOM PENH, 9 February 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has lodged a formal protest against what it calls illegal activities by Thai armed forces in areas it insists lie within its sovereign territory.

In a statement Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it had registered its “strongest protest” over the placement of shipping containers and the construction of roads by Thai troops in Oddar Meanchey and Pursat provinces.

According to the ministry, Thai forces blocked road access at two locations in Oddar Meanchey on 5 February by placing large containers in Rouch Champey and O Khla Khmum villages.

Two days later, troops reportedly began building a road extending from the blockade site in O Khla Khmum. Additional containers were also placed in Thmor Da commune, Pursat province.

Cambodia said the areas affected are clearly within Cambodian territory under the Franco-Siamese Convention of 1904 and the Treaty of 1907, and noted they were occupied by Thai forces during clashes in December.

Cambodia accused Thailand of violating de-escalation measures agreed under a joint border committee statement on 27 December, warning the actions obstruct displaced civilians from returning and alter security conditions on the ground.

The government said the measures breached the UN Charter and ASEAN Charter, but reaffirmed its commitment to resolving border issues peacefully and in line with international law.
