PHNOM PENH, Feb 2, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting refugees displaced by recent cross-border tensions with Thailand, while maintaining diplomatic efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity, a government spokesman said Monday.

Government spokesman Pen Bona told reporters that Prime Minister Hun Manet visited refugee sites in Preah Vihear province on January 31, underscoring the administration’s focus on humanitarian support.

The premier inspected three safety centers: Wat Bak Kam (housing 540 families), Wat Po Sala/Wat Kilo No. 8 (1,282 families), and Wat Kampong Sangke (774 families), sheltering a total of 2,596 families.

Bona said authorities are coordinating with mine clearance teams and local agencies to remove unexploded ordnance and restore essential services for families able to return home. Committees have been set up to rebuild infrastructure and livelihoods.

For those unable to return, the government is reinforcing temporary shelters or relocating families, while ensuring food, water, and other daily needs are met.

Damage to schools, health centers, roads, bridges, and utilities is being assessed, with reconstruction supported by state resources and development partners.

According to Bona, about 83 percent of refugees—more than 540,000 people—have gradually returned home. However, thousands remain in temporary shelters due to security concerns, destroyed housing, and ongoing threats, which continue to disrupt children’s access to education.

The spokesman also reiterated Cambodia’s position on its border with Thailand, citing historical agreements and demarcation records. He stressed that Phnom Penh does not recognize any border changes imposed by military action.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn had earlier told ASEAN counterparts at an informal meeting in Cebu that, despite a ceasefire, certain actions on the ground still violate the joint declaration from the 3rd Special Border Committee meeting.

The government, Bona said, remains focused on both protecting national territory and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
