Philippines Urges Cambodia and Thailand to Fully Implement Border Agreement

PHNOM PENH, 30 January 2026 (KPT) – The Philippines, as ASEAN chair, has called on Cambodia and Thailand to fully implement the outcomes of their General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held on 27 December 2025, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and stability along their shared frontier.

Speaking at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Cebu on 29 January, Philippine Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro welcomed the third Cambodia–Thailand GBC meeting

and urged both sides to ensure the “full and effective implementation” of its spirit, in line with international law, to promote lasting peace and stability between the two countries and across the wider region.

Lazaro also underscored the role of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in monitoring the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.

She said the AOT would continue to observe and report on developments along the border in accordance with its mandate.

Outlining the Philippines’ priorities as ASEAN chair for 2026, Lazaro emphasized the need for the bloc to address both current and emerging challenges to build a sustainable and resilient ASEAN Community.

These priorities reflect the year’s theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
Foreign ministers also reviewed progress since the Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the Cambodia–Thailand situation, held on 22 December 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed his country’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully, in accordance with international law and existing treaties, to safeguard regional peace and stability.
