Cambodia installs digital classrooms in displacement camps

PHNOM PENH, 28 January 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s Ministry of Education has set up digital classrooms in displacement camps in Oddar Meanchey province to support students and teachers affected by recent border tensions.

The ministry said its Department of Digital Transformation delivered “Digital Schools” to Chong Kal and Wat Bat Thkau safety camps on 26 January.

The initiative involves mobile computer classrooms equipped with laptops for teachers, ten computers for students, smart televisions and an offline digital library containing two terabytes of educational material, including more than 3,000 books and thousands of videos.

The content can be accessed via local Wi-Fi without an internet connection. Officials described the project as a model of “Mobile Digital Schools” designed to ensure continuity of learning in emergency and remote settings.

Training sessions were also held for 20 teachers, 50 students and parents on how to use and maintain the equipment.

The ministry has appealed to development partners and donors to help expand the programme to other displacement camps and remote schools, saying it aims to reduce the digital divide and improve access to education.

Authorities report that more than 80 percent of the 640,000 people displaced by the conflict have returned home, while around 100,000 remain in temporary safety centres where they continue to receive assistance.
