Cambodia’s decision to join Trump’s “Board of Peace” reflects constitutional commitment to global stability

PHNOM PENH, Jan 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia’s acceptance of an invitation to join U.S. President Donald Trump’s newly established Board of Peace has sparked debate at home and abroad. Analysts argue the move is not a geopolitical shift but rather a continuation of Cambodia’s constitutional commitment to neutrality, peace, and multilateral diplomacy.
Officials in Phnom Penh have emphasized that participation does not undermine existing frameworks such as the United Nations or ASEAN.
Instead, they say it reinforces Cambodia’s image as a peace-oriented nation, consistent with its long-standing foreign policy principles.
Constitutional and diplomatic rationale
Political expert Kin Phea said the decision aligns with constitutional provisions that enshrine peace and international cooperation as guiding principles.
He noted that Cambodia’s involvement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and regional instability, including the sensitive border situation with Thailand.
“Joining this initiative demonstrates that Cambodia is a peace-loving nation,” he said. “Any initiative aimed at promoting world peace is something Cambodia welcomes.”
Phea stressed that Cambodia’s participation should not be misinterpreted as bloc alignment or a departure from ASEAN and UN frameworks.
Rather, he said, it should be seen as reinforcing existing mechanisms. “On the contrary, it is an expression of Cambodia’s firm stand in favor of peaceful resolution under internationally recognized mechanisms,” he added.
Analysts highlight pragmatic benefits
Yang Peou, another Cambodian analyst, echoed these views, describing the decision as pragmatic. He argued that Trump’s emphasis on mediation and conflict de-escalation makes the Board of Peace a potentially useful platform.
“The Cambodian government has always supported peace initiatives,” Peou said. “Its firm stance on peaceful border resolutions and its support for the UN framework clearly demonstrate Cambodia’s commitment to global peace.”
He added that Cambodia’s participation aims to help prevent conflict and promote stability worldwide, while maintaining diplomatic caution.

Government position
Prime Minister Hun Manet formally announced Cambodia’s founding membership on January 16, clarifying that the three-year role carries no financial obligations.
He explained that the widely reported US$1 billion fee applies only to permanent members.
“Goodwill, love of peace, support, and contribution to building and maintaining peace are principles Cambodia has always upheld,” Hun Manet said in a statement.
Government spokesman Pen Bona described the invitation as “an honor for Cambodia,” noting that despite its size, the country is recognized internationally for its peacekeeping contributions.
Cambodia has a history of deploying troops under UN missions in conflict-affected countries, reinforcing its credibility as a contributor to global stability.
International context
The Board of Peace was launched to oversee stabilization and reconstruction in Gaza, based on a 20-point plan endorsed by the UN Security Council in late 2025.
The initiative includes provisions for humanitarian access, reconstruction funding, and transitional governance. As of January 2026, between 24 and 35 countries have agreed to join, including Vietnam and Indonesia within ASEAN.
Analysts argue Cambodia’s decision reflects continuity rather than change. By joining Trump’s Board of Peace while reaffirming its commitment to UN and ASEAN frameworks, Cambodia seeks to balance global engagement with diplomatic caution.
For Phnom Penh, the move underscores its ambition to project itself as a small state with a strong voice for peace in an increasingly unstable world.
