Cambodia and Thailand hold border talks ahead of special meeting

PHNOM PENH, Jan 27, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Thailand held preparatory talks Tuesday at the Poipet International Border Checkpoint as both sides move towards a special meeting aimed at maintaining stability along their shared frontier.
The meeting brought together the secretariats of the Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC), involving Cambodia’s 5th Military Region and Thailand’s 1st Army Area.
Cambodia’s delegation was led by Major General Sar Kimpak, chief of the RBC Secretariat, while Thailand was represented by Major General Phittayakool Pothisuwan, chairman of the Thai RBC Secretariat.
According to Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, the two sides discussed agenda items and exchanged documents in preparation for the Special Meeting of the RBC, scheduled for January 29.
The talks were conducted in line with the joint statement of the third Special Meeting of the General Border Committee, held on December 27 last year.
Officials said the aim was to ensure effective implementation of agreed measures, strengthen mutual trust and preserve peace and stability along the border.
The RBC Secretariat meeting will continue until January 28 and is being observed by the ASEAN Observer Team from both countries.
