US Navy Warship Visit to Cambodia Unlikely to Affect Thai Border Dispute, Analyst Says

PHNOM PENH, Jan 26, 2026 (KPT) – A brief port call by a United States Navy warship to Cambodia is a positive step for bilateral relations but is unlikely to influence the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute, a leading analyst said Monday.

Youk Chhang, Director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia, said the visit by the USS Cincinnati to Ream Naval Base should be welcomed as a contribution to improving ties between Phnom Penh and Washington.

But he noted the border conflict is shaped largely by internal Thai politics rather than external diplomatic developments.

Chhang said the dispute is driven by debates within Thailand over nationalism, governance and relations with neighbours, adding that Bangkok has long relied on close ties with Washington to pursue nationalist policies even when they diverge from US interests.

“They are even less concerned that any warming of ties between Phnom Penh and Washington could displace Thai–US relations,” he said.

He argued that only a major shift in US foreign policy priorities could influence Thai nationalist ambitions, a scenario he described as highly unlikely.

A resolution, he said, would require pragmatic Thai leadership, which currently appears remote.

The USS Cincinnati (LCS 20) docked at Ream Naval Base on Friday for a four day visit aimed at strengthening military to military ties.

Cambodian and US naval personnel are taking part in joint training and friendly sports events, including a football match in Preah Sihanouk province.

Officials said the visit reflects Cambodia’s policy of openness and transparency in engaging international partners and its commitment to regional peace and stability.

The 3,000 tonne vessel, commanded by Cmdr Andrew J Recame, was welcomed by Rear Admiral In Sokhemara, Deputy Commander of Ream Naval Base.

Separately, Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call from Admiral Samuel Paparo, Commander of the US Indo Pacific Command, at the Peace Palace on January 26, where the two discussed regional security and cooperation.
