PHNOM PENH, Jan 22, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has accused the Thai military of violating its sovereignty and international law after troops reportedly destroyed a Lord Vishnu statue and installed a Buddha statue in an occupied area of Preah Vihear province.

The Ministry of Cult and Religion said the installation took place in An Ses village, Choam Ksan district, describing the act as abusive and unacceptable. Officials said the move contravenes fundamental principles of international law prohibiting the use of force to acquire territory and represents a direct infringement on Cambodia’s sovereignty.

The ministry added that the action contradicts Thailand’s commitments to peacefully resolve disputes under several bilateral agreements, including the July 2025 ceasefire, the minutes of the General Border Committee, a joint statement on peaceful dispute resolution in October, and a joint declaration from December’s special border committee meeting.

Cambodia called on the Thai military to respect international law, abide by the spirit of these agreements and fulfil its obligations under existing treaties. The ministry stressed that religious installations should never be used to reinforce territorial claims, warning that such actions risk undermining fragile peace efforts along the border.

Officials said Cambodia remains committed to dialogue and peaceful resolution but will continue to raise the issue with international partners to ensure its sovereignty and cultural heritage are protected.
