Analysts say Thailand sidestepping border mechanisms amid Cambodia tensions

PHNOM PENH, Jan 21, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodian analysts have accused Thailand of bypassing international and bilateral mechanisms for resolving border disputes, following weeks of clashes and a ceasefire agreed late last year.
Political analyst Chhit Bunthong said Thailand appeared to have strayed from established frameworks after 21 days of fighting, while maintaining control over areas claimed by Cambodia.
He cited treaties such as the Franco Siam accords and bilateral bodies including the General Border Committee and Joint Boundary Commission.
Bunthong alleged Thai forces have continued to violate agreed principles since the ceasefire by installing barbed wire, placing shipping containers and constructing fences around Cambodian villages — moves he described as attempts to occupy land.
Another analyst, Kin Phea, echoed the concerns, saying Thailand seemed reluctant to resolve disputes through bilateral channels.
He accused Bangkok of abusing the ceasefire and violating international law, including provisions under the UN and ASEAN charters, while suggesting domestic politics may be influencing the border stance.
Cambodia’s foreign ministry confirmed it had lodged another protest over Thai military activities on January 19, including the installation of a Buddha statue in Preah Vihear province and construction of bunkers in Banteay Meanchey.
Government spokesman Pen Bona said Cambodia’s position is grounded in historical treaties and boundary markers, stressing that borders cannot be altered by force.
Analysts warned that without renewed dialogue and adherence to legal frameworks, tensions could escalate further, threatening regional stability and ASEAN cooperation.
