Cambodia, Red Cross discuss humanitarian issues after border tensions
PHNOM PENH, Jan 12, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s defence ministry has held talks with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on humanitarian concerns linked to recent tensions with Thailand, officials said Monday.
The meeting took place in Phnom Penh under the authorisation of Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Seiha. The ICRC delegation was led by its head of mission in Cambodia, Stéphane Bonamy.
According to the ministry, discussions focused on the situation along the border, including the ICRC’s follow up on the repatriation of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained in Thailand.
The two sides also reviewed preparations for upcoming humanitarian missions in provinces affected by recent hostilities.
Cambodian officials expressed appreciation for the ICRC’s role in monitoring the welfare of the soldiers during their 155 days in custody, until their return home.
They said the involvement helped ensure respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of detainees’ rights.
Both sides reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation and adherence to humanitarian law, stressing their commitment to addressing needs and promoting stability in conflict affected areas.
