Cambodia Seeks Release of Four Fishermen Detained by Thai Navy

Phnom Penh, Jan.08,2026 (KPT)- Cambodia is working with Thailand to secure the release of four Cambodian fishermen detained by the Thai navy on Jan. 6, officials said.

Chi Va, governor of Koh Kong province, confirmed the ongoing efforts during a Jan. 7 meeting with local fishermen and briefed the families of those affected.

“Authorities at all levels are actively working on this matter. Some details are confidential due to the nature of the work. We hope the four fishermen will soon return home safely,” the provincial administration said in a post on its official Facebook page.

The incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 6, when a Cambodian fishing boat with four crew members was seized near Koh Ye, in waters close to the unresolved Cambodia-Thailand maritime border.

Chi urged local fishermen to stay within Cambodian waters to avoid further disputes and to comply with laws regarding boat registration, fishing permits and navigation. She warned that false or exaggerated reports on social media could complicate the situation.

“Do not spread false or sensational information, as it does not help resolve the issue,” she said, emphasizing the importance of safety and adherence to legal procedures.

She noted that the Cambodia-Thailand border situation remains sensitive, especially during this period when both sides are expected to strictly respect the cease-fire agreement signed Dec. 27, 2025.

She urged citizens to cooperate with the Royal Government and relevant authorities to ensure the effective implementation and preservation of the cease-fire.

She added that the Royal Government has been actively seeking solutions through all possible means, including military and diplomatic channels, to resolve border disputes and related issues with Thailand peacefully.
