PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Jan.05,2026) — Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the Thai military of carrying out a 20-day operation that resulted in the occupation of several areas inside Cambodian territory, saying the actions violated the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement late Sunday, the ministry said Thai armed forces conducted military operations in four provinces — Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey — between Dec. 7 and Dec. 27.

The alleged incursions included the occupation of villages, border checkpoints and sites of cultural and religious significance.

Cambodia said the operations continued even after a ceasefire agreement was reached at the third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee on Dec. 27.

Officials said the Royal Government had lodged its strongest diplomatic protest against what it described as Thailand’s “illegal presence” and “continued military operations” in the provinces.

The ministry said Thai military activity caused damage to civilian and cultural sites, including Prey Chan, Chokchey and Boeng Trakuon villages in Banteay Meanchey province, as well as the Thma Da international border gate area in Pursat province.

Chan Rathana, undersecretary of state and deputy spokesperson for the ministry, said the actions violated commitments made between the two countries.

Government spokesperson Pen Bona added that Phnom Penh “strongly rejects” Thailand’s continued military presence in what Cambodia considers its territory.
