Japan Issues Travel Warning as Cambodia-Thailand Clashes Intensify

Phnom Penh, Cambodia(Dec.26,2025) — Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned of worsening security conditions along the Cambodia-Thailand border as renewed military clashes between the two countries spread and intensify.
The ministry said fighting that resumed Dec. 7 has expanded across the border region. Artillery shelling and airstrikes have been reported in densely populated areas, including Poipet in Banteay Meanchey province and Khemarak Phoumin, the capital of Koh Kong province.
Local authorities have ordered evacuations in both cities. Japan issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid areas within 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the Thai border. Those remaining in Poipet and Khemarak Phoumin were told to follow evacuation orders and leave once it is safe.
In Poipet, clashes have continued in the Chok Chey and Prey Chan settlements of O’Chrou district. An aerial attack on Dec. 10 prompted a citywide evacuation order. Airstrikes and shelling have continued since, with another evacuation order issued Dec. 23.
In Khemarak Phoumin, shelling was reported Dec. 13 near the Koh Yor coastal area, leading authorities to order residents to evacuate.
Japan’s foreign ministry said armed clashes remain ongoing and warned the situation could deteriorate further. It advised Japanese nationals facing difficulties evacuating to contact the nearest embassy or consular office.
