Cambodia Accuses Thai Forces of Strikes, PM Hun Manet Appeals to U.S. for Ceasefire Support

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 26, 2025) — Cambodia has accused Thai military forces of launching coordinated attacks on villages and historic temples along the border, while Prime Minister Hun Manet appealed directly to Washington for urgent support in securing a ceasefire.
The Ministry of National Defence said Thai forces carried out shelling and air strikes between Dec. 25 and the morning of Dec. 26, hitting Prey Chan and Chouk Chey villages as well as Ta Moun, Ta Krabei and Preah Vihear temples.
Officials alleged the use of artillery, tanks, drones and toxic gas, though the claims could not be independently verified.
Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said temples were repeatedly targeted, including heavy artillery fire on Ta Moun and Preah Vihear. Civilian areas in Banteay Meanchey and Battambang provinces were also struck, causing injuries and property damage.
In a phone call on Dec. 25, Hun Manet briefed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the escalating situation, stressing Cambodia’s commitment to restraint and dialogue.
Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s readiness to help secure an immediate ceasefire and support peace talks under the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration.
Cambodia urged the international community to condemn Thai actions and back urgent de-escalation efforts.
