Cambodia Condemns Thai Forces for Striking Civilian Areas in Border Escalation
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 22, 2025) — Cambodia condemned Thai forces on Monday for continuing attacks on civilian areas along the border, alleging shelling and gunfire struck villages, temples and residential zones in multiple provinces.
The Ministry of National Defence said Thai military operations extended across Cambodia’s 4th and 5th Military Regions, with sustained shelling reported between midday and 3 p.m. in Preah Vihear province, including near Ta Moun Thom temple. Additional fire was reported in Ta Thav and Koul Bram Bei.
In Battambang province, officials said villages including Kilo 9 in Sampou Loun district and Prey Chan came under attack from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ministry also alleged Thai forces opened fire near a casino and residential areas in Poipet at 10:50 a.m., followed by drone activity over Boeung Trokoun and further artillery strikes later in the day.
Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, ministry spokesperson, said Cambodian forces were defending their positions and denied targeting civilians, insisting operations were limited to self-defense.
The government called on the international community to condemn what it described as violations of international law and demanded an immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of Thai troops from disputed areas.
