Beijing Steps In as China Envoy Holds Talks on Cambodia-Thailand Conflict

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec.20,2025) — A senior Chinese diplomat has visited Cambodia to discuss efforts to de-escalate the armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

Deng Xijun, China’s special envoy for Asian affairs, arrived in Phnom Penh on Dec. 19 for meetings with Cambodian leaders aimed at supporting an immediate cease-fire and encouraging peaceful dialogue between the two neighbors.

Deng paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hun Manet and held separate talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Tea Seyha, and senior military commander Gen. Mao Sophan.

Cambodian officials said both sides stressed the urgent need for a cease-fire, agreeing that dialogue remains the only viable means of resolving the dispute.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet emphasized the importance of respecting existing bilateral agreements and established mechanisms, calling them essential for a fair, lasting and peaceful solution in line with international law.

He expressed gratitude to China and President Xi Jinping for what he described as Beijing’s leadership and personal efforts to help restore peace and maintain regional stability.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said Cambodia has adhered to the cease-fire since it took effect and remains committed to the principles of non-use of force and peaceful dispute settlement.

Deng reaffirmed China’s willingness to play a constructive role in facilitating dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand.

He said China, as a friend to both countries, stood ready to support efforts to stabilize the situation and rebuild mutual trust.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed China’s involvement and thanked Beijing for pledging humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the fighting. He expressed hope that peace would allow both nations to coexist in stability and shared prosperity.
