PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 16, 2025) — Cambodia rejected what it called fabricated and defamatory reports alleging the detention of Thai nationals, stressing that citizens from Thailand continue to enjoy safety, freedom of movement and legal protection despite escalating border tensions.

In a statement Monday, the Ministry of Interior said claims circulating in Thai media and online platforms were “irresponsible and malicious misinformation” that had unnecessarily alarmed Thai nationals in Cambodia and their families in Thailand.

Officials emphasized that no Thai nationals have been arrested, imprisoned, threatened or mistreated. On the contrary, Thai residents in Poipet and other areas have posted videos showing daily life continuing normally, the ministry said.

Cambodian leaders, including Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet, have instructed authorities to avoid discrimination and uphold humanitarian principles even as fighting persists along parts of the frontier.

The ministry clarified that while land and maritime crossings with Thailand have been temporarily suspended due to armed clashes, Thai nationals remain free to leave Cambodia by air or through checkpoints with other neighboring countries.

Reaffirming obligations under international law, Cambodia said law enforcement agencies will continue to protect civilians and foreign nationals. The government urged the public and international community not to be misled by false or exaggerated reports.
