PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 9, 2025) — Global concern is mounting as armed clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border intensify, prompting the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh to issue a security alert and several major embassies and international organizations to call for an immediate halt to the violence.

In its advisory, the U.S. Embassy warned of a “significant escalation” in fighting, citing widespread reports of artillery and small‑arms exchanges on Dec. 8 and claims that Thai military aircraft conducted strikes inside Cambodia. It urged U.S. citizens to avoid all travel within 50 kilometers of the border, noting active hostilities, a highly volatile situation, and limited ability to provide emergency assistance. Americans living near conflict zones were advised to follow Cambodian security instructions and monitor local updates.

Germany also voiced strong concern. Frank Hartmann, director general for Asia and the Pacific at the German Foreign Office, said he was “deeply concerned about the recent violence along the border,” warning that casualties and damage “increase the risk of escalation.” He urged both sides “to immediately halt the conflict and work towards peaceful resolution, while prioritizing civilian safety.” His remarks were published on the German Embassy’s official Facebook page.

Germany’s statement follows similar appeals from France, Australia, Japan, and Canada as well as the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, all expressing alarm over rising civilian harm as clashes expand.

Cambodian authorities said recent attacks killed seven civilians and injured 20, adding to the humanitarian toll as thousands flee border areas. With cross‑border fire ongoing and diplomatic pressure intensifying, the situation remains precarious as the international community pushes for de‑escalation and renewed dialogue.
