Defense Ministry: Thai Forces Continue Attacks Inside Cambodia, Civilians Killed

Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Dec.9,2025)—Cambodia has accused the Thai military of carrying out overnight attacks along the shared border in Pursat province, alleging violations of a recently signed ceasefire agreement.

According to Cambodian officials, Thai forces conducted operations throughout the night in Military Region 5, Thmor Da commune. Between 4:58 and 5:25 a.m., a large drone was reportedly used for surveillance over the Phnom Trango area, followed by what Cambodia described as a chemical smoke attack.

Authorities said Thai units then fired 105 mm artillery rounds at the O’Phluk Domrei area between 5:30 and 6:10 a.m., with firing continuing afterward.

The Ministry of National Defense said Cambodian forces were maintaining restraint in line with the government’s commitment to resolve the dispute peacefully and in accordance with international law.

Officials said the actions breached the ceasefire and the “Joint Statement on the Cambodia–Thailand Peace Agreement” signed Oct. 26, 2025, witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as ASEAN chair.

Phnom Penh has called on Thailand to return to full compliance with the agreement and halt further military activity along the border. Thailand has not yet issued a response to the allegations.

Separately, defense officials reported that Thai soldiers opened fire along the border early Tuesday, killing two Cambodian civilians traveling on National Road 56 in Banteay Meanchey province.

The ministry said the incident began at 12:59 a.m. in Thma Pouk district, when Thai forces intensified attacks with artillery fire. Gunfire continued through much of the night in Military Region 5, with rounds fired from the Thai side striking the civilians.

Cambodian officials said the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces are following government directives to resolve tensions peacefully and in line with international law.

At the same time, the ministry emphasized that Cambodian forces remain prepared to defend the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens, warning that no unlawful incursion into Cambodian territory will be tolerated.
