PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 8, 2025) — Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen has accused Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul of escalating military conflict with Cambodia for electoral advantage, as deadly clashes along the northern frontier intensify.

In a video and statement posted on his official Facebook page, Samdech Techo Hun Sen alleged Anutin is “using the lives of soldiers and civilians” to wage war with Cambodia as part of his campaign strategy, despite Cambodian forces refraining from returning fire.

“I never imagined the Thai Prime Minister would dare declare war on Cambodia for the sake of his electoral goals,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen wrote. “Before becoming Prime Minister, he was a friend; once in office, he forgets friendship. Patriotism is understandable, but it is unacceptable to declare war on a side that is not responding.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also released footage showing what he described as a personal connection between Anutin and Pailin Governor Ban Sreymom. In the clip, Sreymom, then a provincial official, is heard inviting Anutin — serving at the time as Thailand’s deputy prime minister and interior minister — to join her for a meal.

His remarks came as Thai forces launched attacks Dec. 7–8 using F‑16 fighter jets, heavy weapons and toxic smoke in Preah Vihear, Banteay Meanchey and Oddar Meanchey provinces. Cambodian officials reported widespread destruction of property and mounting civilian casualties.

By Monday afternoon, at least four civilians had been killed, nine injured and tens of thousands displaced. Information Minister Neth Pheaktra confirmed mass evacuations in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear as hostilities entered a second day.
