PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 2, 2025) — Cambodia and Canada marked a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations Tuesday, celebrating bilateral trade surpassing $1 billion and Ottawa’s reopening of its embassy in Phnom Penh.

Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen hailed the milestone during talks with Canadian Ambassador Christian DesRoches, calling it proofs of the “commitment and hard work of both sides,” despite the geographical distance between the two nations.

DesRoches underscored the positive momentum in ties and expressed his personal connection to Cambodia, noting his study of the Khmer language and close following of the country’s history. He said Canada’s decision to restore a full diplomatic presence reflects renewed confidence in Cambodia and a desire to expand cooperation.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed the embassy’s reopening, saying it will strengthen collaboration in trade, investment and diplomacy. DesRoches pledged to encourage more Canadian investors to explore opportunities in Cambodia, citing the success of Canadian-owned ABA Bank as a model.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to broaden economic ties and build on the longstanding friendship between Cambodia and Canada.
