Officials Highlight Cambodia’s Longstanding Efforts to Tackle Landmines
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 2, 2025) — Cambodia has transformed from one of the world’s most heavily mined countries into a regional leader in mine clearance and survivor support, officials said at a recent meeting.
Senior Minister Ly Thuch cited more than three decades of work to remove mines and explosive remnants of war, noting Cambodia’s expertise in clearance operations, information management and assistance for survivors living with the consequences of past conflicts.
He said Cambodia has also contributed to global mine action through United Nations peacekeeping missions, with national and international operators sharing expertise via training programs, study visits and cooperation with other affected nations.
Officials stressed that Cambodia’s achievements reflect strong government backing under former Prime Minister Hun Sen and current Prime Minister Hun Manet, alongside support from international partners and the private sector.
Thuch acknowledged ongoing challenges along the Cambodia-Thailand border, where landmines continue to threaten civilians and military personnel. He said sustained resources and technical cooperation are needed to ensure safety.
Izumi Nakamitsu, the U.N. high representative for disarmament affairs, praised Cambodia’s mine clearance efforts as vital to peace and national development, urging Cambodia and Thailand to resolve border disputes peacefully.
