PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Dec. 2, 2025) — The president of Cambodia’s National Assembly, Samdech Khuon Sudary, sent condolences to Indonesia following severe flooding and landslides in Sumatra that caused heavy loss of life and widespread destruction.

In a letter dated Monday, Khuon Sudary said she was “deeply grieved” by reports of casualties, thousands of families displaced and extensive property damage. She conveyed condolences to Puan Maharani, speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, and to the families of those who died or remain missing.

Khuon Sudary expressed solidarity with the Indonesian government and people during what she described as a difficult time, and wished affected communities a swift recovery. She concluded the message by extending “profound condolences” and reaffirming her “highest consideration” to her Indonesian counterpart.

Heavy monsoon rains exacerbated by a tropical storm triggered destructive flash floods and landslides in late November on Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. The worst-hit provinces were North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh.
Rivers burst their banks, landslides buried mountainside villages and entire communities were inundated, with houses swept away or submerged.

As of Monday, official reports indicated at least 604 people dead and 464 missing, with many more injured or displaced. The disaster left tens of thousands homeless, destroyed critical infrastructure including roads, bridges and communications, and cut off many communities from rescue and relief efforts.
