Cambodia denies social media claims of Vietnam road project violating waters pact
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.24,2025) — Cambodia’s Foreign Ministry has denied social media claims that Vietnam is building a road across the sea from An Giang province’s Tien Hai island commune to Phu Quoc island, saying the reports are false.
In a statement Monday, the ministry said the Vietnamese ambassador and Vietnam’s embassy in Phnom Penh confirmed no such project exists that would breach the 1982 Cambodia-Vietnam Agreement on Historical Waters.
The ministry said images circulating online, which purportedly show the road, actually depict construction of a road leading to the Multi-functional Port of Ha Tien City, located entirely within Vietnamese territory.
Officials urged the public to stop sharing the misinformation, warning it could cause misunderstandings and harm relations between the two countries.
Cambodia and Vietnam share a long maritime boundary governed in part by the 1982 agreement, which regulates activities in overlapping areas to prevent disputes. Similar claims have surfaced in recent years, prompting clarifications from both governments.
The ministry said its statement was intended to reaffirm that both countries are respecting their agreements and to maintain stable, friendly ties.
