Cambodia’s Largest Water Reservoir Project Reaches 40% Completion in Pursat

PURSAT, Cambodia (Nov. 24, 2025) — Construction of Reservoir Dam Development Project No. 2, set to become Cambodia’s largest water reservoir, has reached 40% completion, Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on his official Facebook page.

The project began in January 2025 along the Promaoy River in Rakat commune, Phnom Kravanh district, and is scheduled for completion in December 2027.

With an estimated storage capacity of 860 million cubic meters, the dam is expected to strengthen water security, boost agricultural productivity and mitigate natural disasters in the region. Officials said the reservoir will be able to irrigate up to 262,500 hectares of farmland, ensuring a stable water supply during both dry and rainy seasons.

The $100 million project is also designed to minimize recurring flooding in downstream areas of Pursat province, which have long been vulnerable to seasonal damage. By controlling water flow, the dam will help protect irrigation systems and other critical infrastructure.

Once completed, the reservoir area is expected to develop into a natural tourism site, contributing to local economic growth. Officials said the project will become a major national asset, enhancing Cambodia’s resilience to climate change and supporting sustainable development for rural communities.
