Malaysian Prime Minister Dismisses Allegations of Meddling in Thai Affairs

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Nov. 24, 2025) — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has rejected allegations from groups in Thailand that he interfered in their domestic affairs over the country’s border dispute with Cambodia, calling the claims baseless.

Anwar said Malaysia’s role was limited to facilitating dialogue between the two neighbors. “We just helped them achieve a settlement or resolution to their conflict. We did not prescribe how they should solve their problems,” he said.

“We got their armed forces chiefs to meet, and I contacted both prime ministers to encourage talks. Of course, President Donald Trump also spoke with them.”

He added that Malaysia acted as a friend to both sides and that ASEAN leaders supported its position. “Our interest is just to help them achieve peace,” Anwar said.

Asked if he would raise the issue with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during an upcoming visit, Anwar said he would listen if the subject was broached.

He stressed Malaysia remained committed to peace efforts despite criticism from some quarters in Thailand.

Political analyst Kin Phea said Thailand prefers to resolve the dispute bilaterally, while Cambodia seeks third-party involvement.

Protesters recently gathered at the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok, accusing Anwar of political interference and warning against outside pressure.
