CDI Issues Statement Backing Cambodia-Thailand Peace Deal

MANILA, Philippines (Nov. 24, 2025) — The Centrist Democrat International has voiced strong support for the recent peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, urging both countries to uphold their commitments amid sporadic border violence.

In a statement, member parties said the organization remains committed to promoting centrist democratic values and human dignity, highlighting unity in diversity, solidarity and justice as central pillars of its work.

The group reiterated its backing for the peaceful settlement of disputes and the restoration of regional stability. CDI welcomed the peace deal signed Oct. 26 during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

The group commended the roles played in the negotiations, including President Donald Trump, described as taking a leading role in brokering the talks, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired ASEAN in 2025. It also noted strong support from China and the wider international community.

The statement acknowledged global appeals for restraint during fighting between July 24 and July 28, saying international pressure helped avert further escalation. CDI praised humanitarian aid delivered to displaced civilians and voiced full support for the ceasefire and truce arrangements.

The group urged both sides to remove unexploded ordnance, including cluster munitions, citing concerns for civilian safety and the need to restore normal social and economic life.

CDI also called for the immediate release of 18 Cambodian soldiers it said were captured by Thai forces July 29, a day after a ceasefire was agreed. It warned that violations of international law and humanitarian principles must not be tolerated.

The organization expressed alarm at what it described as a brief but deadly assault on unarmed civilians in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province Nov. 12, in which one person was killed and three injured.

It condemned the incident and urged the Thai government and military to comply fully with peace arrangements and with ASEAN and United Nations charters.

CDI appealed for international assistance to restore UNESCO World Heritage sites and other cultural heritage damaged during the clashes. It also called for investigations into alleged deliberate destruction of cultural property.

The group concluded by encouraging its global network of political parties to strengthen collective efforts in support of peace, security and international rule of law, saying such principles remain central to global stability and prosperity.
