ASEAN Chair Urges Calm in Border Talks With Cambodian, Thai Leaders

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Nov.14, 2025) — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, current chair of ASEAN, held separate phone calls with the prime ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to discuss rising tensions along their shared border and reaffirm regional peace efforts.

In a statement posted Thursday night, Anwar said he spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. He said both leaders offered “constructive and positive views” and reiterated their commitment to resolving the situation peacefully, in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement signed last month.

Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s desire to see the ceasefire upheld and bilateral ties strengthened, adding that Kuala Lumpur remained ready to serve as a facilitator in efforts to restore stability.

Both leaders expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s role, not only as ASEAN chair but also as a close neighbor committed to regional peace, Anwar said.

He urged Cambodia and Thailand to continue demonstrating “commitment and courage” to stabilize the border area and ensure long-term security for people in both countries.
