PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.10,2015) — Britain’s King Charles III has extended congratulations to King Norodom Sihamoni and the Cambodian people on the occasion of the country’s 72nd Independence Day.

In a message released Saturday, King Charles said he and Queen Camilla were “delighted” to offer their warmest wishes to Cambodia’s monarch and citizens on their National Day. He praised the “strong ties” between the United Kingdom and Cambodia and expressed hope for deepening bilateral friendship.

The British monarch also emphasized his commitment to closer cooperation on global challenges, including climate change and environmental protection.

“My wife and I have great pleasure in conveying our best wishes to you and to all Cambodians in the year ahead,” the message read.

Cambodia marked its independence from French colonial rule with a ceremony at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh. King Sihamoni presided over the event, which was attended by Prime Minister Hun Manet, the president of the Senate, and the president of the National Assembly.

A central moment in the ceremony was the lighting of the “victory flame,” symbolizing national unity, pride and sovereignty. The event was broadcast live on television and radio, with the monument and surrounding area adorned with patriotic banners.

November 9 also commemorates the founding of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, making the day a dual celebration for the kingdom.
