PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Nov.03,2025) — Cambodia remains committed to press freedom and the protection of journalists, a senior official said, citing improved safety and professional conditions across the country.

“Ensuring a safe and supportive environment benefits journalism and media in Cambodia,” said Tep Asnarith, undersecretary of state and spokesperson for the Ministry of Information.

“The Ministry of Information and the Royal Government continue to protect journalists who are legally registered, respect professional ethics, and carry out their duties according to the law.”

Asnarith said press freedom continues to be a government priority under the current seventh mandate, building on previous efforts.

A nationwide survey conducted in 2025 found that 86% of journalists said they could work safely and without intimidation, up from 79.8% in 2024. Additionally, 81.4% of respondents said press freedom had improved.

Ministry records show no journalist has been killed while performing professional duties in accordance with journalistic ethics over the past eight years. Between 2024 and early 2025, four former journalists and ministry officials died of natural causes, and one journalist died following a personal dispute, which authorities said has been resolved.

The ministry said it offers protection and support programs for journalists regardless of nationality, religion, race or political affiliation. It also promotes professional development and provides guidance on journalistic ethics to ensure compliance across media and broadcasting sectors.
