Cambodia, Thailand Hold Joint Border Meeting to Ease Tensions
ODDAR MEANCHEY, Cambodia (Oct. 31, 2025) — Cambodia and Thailand held a joint military meeting Friday at the O’Smach border checkpoint as part of ongoing efforts to ease tensions along their shared frontier.
The Special Cambodia–Thailand Regional Border Committee (RBC) Joint Secretariat Meeting brought together senior military officials from both countries.
Brig. Gen. Nit Narong, deputy chief of staff of Cambodia’s Military Region 4, led the Cambodian delegation. Brig. Gen. Kamphaknak Vapansoo, chief of staff of Thailand’s 2nd Army Area, headed the Thai side. ASEAN Observer Teams were present to monitor the ceasefire and ensure compliance.
Talks focused on the gradual, phased removal of heavy weapons to reduce military tensions and promote stability in the border area.
The meeting followed a joint declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur on Oct. 26 and the second special meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee held in Malaysia on Oct. 23. Both sides have begun the first phase of partial weapons withdrawal as a goodwill gesture.
“This meeting reflects a commitment to implement the agreements in good faith,” said Gen. Maly Socheata, spokeswoman for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence.
