Child Killed, Father Injured in Cluster Bomb Blast in Northern Cambodia
PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia (Oct.30, 2025) — A 10-year-old boy was killed and his father seriously injured when a cluster bomb exploded in northern Cambodia, authorities said.
The blast occurred on Oct. 25 in Pongkol Village, Srah Aem Commune, Choam Ksant District, Preah Vihear Province. The boy, identified as Soeun Sovann, died at the scene. His father, Sien Sun, was rushed to the 16 January Hospital in Preah Vihear for treatment.
Officials believe the explosion was caused by unexploded ordnance left behind from past conflicts.
The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) issued a public warning urging residents to avoid touching or moving any suspected explosives.
“If you see landmines or unexploded ordnance, do not touch, move, or play with them,” the CMAA said in a statement. “Please report immediately to local authorities or the nearest mine clearance operators so they can safely destroy the explosives.”
Cambodia remains one of the world’s most heavily mined countries, with decades-old ordnance continuing to pose deadly risks to civilians, particularly in rural areas.
