Japan Backs ASEAN Observer Team, Urges Peaceful Border Resolution

TOKYO (Sept. 11, 2025) — The Japanese government has voiced strong support for Cambodia and Thailand’s efforts to resolve border tensions through dialogue, following the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held Sept. 10 in Khemarak Phoumin, Koh Kong province, Cambodia.

Japan reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the steady implementation of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the government welcomed progress made during the GBC meeting, including discussions on establishing an ASEAN Observer Team, advancing demining efforts, and resuming cross-border logistics.

The ministry also expressed respect for the diplomatic efforts of all parties involved, particularly Malaysia, which has played a key role in advancing the ceasefire agreement as ASEAN Chair.

Japan emphasized the importance of a peaceful resolution and urged both Cambodia and Thailand to continue observing the ceasefire. A stable and cooperative relationship between the two nations is vital for regional peace and security, the ministry said.

During the special GBC session, Thailand agreed to remove heavy weaponry from disputed border areas and return it to military installations. Both sides pledged to restore bilateral relations and normalize conditions, including the repatriation of captured soldiers “as soon as possible.”

Japan said it will continue working with relevant countries to support de-escalation and the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
