Cambodian Envoy Briefs UN Chief on Border Tensions with Thailand
UNITED NATIONS (Aug. 29, 2025) — Cambodia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Aug. 27 to discuss escalating tensions along the Cambodian-Thai border.

During the meeting, Chhea emphasized Cambodia’s adherence to the ceasefire agreement and its continued restraint despite what he described as ongoing violations by Thai military forces.
He raised concerns over recent Thai actions, including the installation of barbed wire that has isolated Cambodian villages, the forced eviction of civilians from long-inhabited homes and the destruction of property. Chhea also rejected Thai allegations that Cambodia had deployed new landmines, stating that all mines present are remnants from the country’s civil war.

Cambodia has submitted clarifications to relevant UN bodies, including photographic evidence of Thai troops laying barbed wire and technical documentation from the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) distinguishing legacy mines from newly laid ones.
