Cambodia Reaffirms Stance Against Fake News, Urges Thailand to Honor Ceasefire Commitments
By Son Minea
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (Aug. 29, 2025) — Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence has reiterated its firm opposition to the dissemination of false information, calling on Thailand to uphold the spirit and commitments of the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held earlier this month.

“Cambodia absolutely does not support the dissemination, sharing or production of fake news,” said ministry spokesperson Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata during a press briefing Friday morning. “Such actions fail to ease tensions, undermine public sentiment and obstruct the creation of an environment conducive to peaceful dialogue.”
She cited one of the 13 points agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand during the Aug. 7 GBC meeting in Kuala Lumpur, which states that both sides must refrain from spreading false information to de-escalate tensions and foster constructive engagement.

Lt. Gen. Socheata also urged Thailand to immediately release the 18 Cambodian soldiers allegedly detained unlawfully on July 29, just hours after the ceasefire agreement took effect. She emphasized Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and the ASEAN Charter.
Regarding the current situation along the border, Socheata reported that from midnight to 6 a.m. Friday, the frontlines in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Banteay Meanchey provinces remained calm, with no new developments. Cambodian forces, she added, continue to maintain full vigilance.
