Cambodia designates World Social Work Day as national observance to strengthen social services

PHNOM PENH, March 18, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has officially designated World Social Work Day as a national observance, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening social services and protecting vulnerable populations.
In a statement Tuesday, Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted this year’s theme, “Building Hope and Wellbeing Together,” and praised the role of social service professionals in supporting at-risk individuals and providing ethical, skilled care to victims and vulnerable groups.
The observance, marked annually on March 19, reflects Cambodia’s participation in global efforts to promote social justice, inclusion and sustainable development.
The King noted that the recognition demonstrates the government’s dedication to improving social services and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable.
Authorities said social welfare priorities have been incorporated into Phase I of the national development strategy, which focuses on livelihoods, infrastructure, water, electricity and technology.
The government has also enacted laws to protect vulnerable groups, including legislation on juvenile justice, child adoption and the rights of persons with disabilities.
To expand the social service workforce, Cambodia trains hundreds of students annually in public and private institutions.
The Ministry of Social Affairs has issued guidelines on professional competencies, while a national social work board is being established to oversee licensing and standards.
Hun Manet said the new observance contributes to building a society rooted in compassion, peace and solidarity, reinforcing Cambodia’s commitment to human rights, equality and social development.
