Cambodia positions itself as balancing force in ASEAN
PHNOM PENH, Mar. 19, 2026 (KPT) — Officials say Cambodia is positioning itself as a constructive and balanced actor within ASEAN, as geopolitical competition intensifies among major powers.
Speaking at the launch of The Rise of the Global South and Its Implications for Japan–ASEAN Partnership in Phnom Penh, Suos Yara, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Commission on Foreign Affairs, said the country will pursue a “middle path” strategy that aligns with ASEAN centrality while maintaining strategic balance in partnerships.
He emphasized the importance of ASEAN principles, including consensus building and the ASEAN Vision 2045, in guiding member states through an increasingly complex geopolitical environment. Cambodia’s role, he added, includes supporting diplomatic solutions, promoting international law, and contributing to regional peace and stability.
Yara highlighted areas where Cambodia can play a role, including strengthening supply chain resilience and ensuring maritime security amid disruptions to global trade routes.
Chheng Kimlong, President of the Asian Vision Institute, said Cambodia, as an active ASEAN member, can help facilitate dialogue and cooperation among partners, including Japan, to support regional stability and development.
