PHNOM PENH, March 23, 2026 (KPT) — Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet has reaffirmed Cambodia’s determination to eliminate tuberculosis, noting that while the country has achieved major progress, infection and mortality rates remain relatively high compared to global averages.

In a letter marking World Tuberculosis Day 2026, observed under the theme “Yes! We Can End Tuberculosis: Led by the Nation, Driven by the People”, Samdech Thipadei said intensified efforts are needed to further reduce TB incidence and deaths in line with sustainable development goals.

He stressed that tackling TB is essential not only for public health but also for socio-economic growth, as healthier citizens contribute directly to productivity, human resource development and improved quality of life.

Cambodia’s free treatment program has delivered striking results. TB mortality fell from 80 cases per 100,000 people in 2000 to 18 in 2024 — a 78 percent reduction. New infections dropped from 853 cases per 100,000 in 2000 to 272 in 2024, a 68 percent decrease.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said these achievements reflect the dedication of health workers and the effectiveness of government policy, but warned that the fight must continue with “efficiency and effectiveness” to safeguard citizens’ well-being.

He added that the progress aligns with the Phase I Action Plan of the 7th National Assembly Government, which prioritizes sustainable development, better living standards and stronger health systems.

The Prime Minister also called for greater public awareness and community participation, stressing that ending TB requires collective responsibility across society.
