PHNOM PENH, March 31, 2026 (KPT) – China has reaffirmed its backing for Cambodia’s flagship Funan Techo Canal project, with its ambassador calling the scheme a “historic achievement” for the kingdom.

Ambassador Wang Wenbin said Beijing was “fully committed” to ensuring the canal’s successful implementation, speaking Tuesday during a courtesy call on National Assembly president Samdech Khuon Sudary ahead of the Khmer New Year.

He expressed confidence that Cambodia would achieve its development goals under Prime Minister Hun Manet, citing the country’s economic potential and national unity.

Wang added that China would continue to support Cambodia’s economic growth and national defence, noting his participation in inaugurations of Chinese-funded projects across the country.

Among them is a new bridge over the Mekong River in Kratie province – a Cambodia-China friendship project expected to improve connectivity and livelihoods once operational.

“China’s assistance has played a key role in Cambodia’s development during challenging periods,” Wang said.

Cambodia has set targets of reaching upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050, as part of a broader strategy to sustain peace and economic growth.
