Chinese doctors advise Cambodian King to remain in China, royal family sends New Year greetings

PHNOM PENH, March 31, 2026 (KPT) – Chinese doctors have advised Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni to remain in Beijing for further medical monitoring, the Royal Palace said Tuesday, as the monarch continues treatment alongside Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.
The palace confirmed the King and Queen Mother are under close supervision at Beijing Hospital, where doctors recommended he extend his rest before returning home.
On the occasion of the Khmer New Year, the royal family conveyed greetings to the nation, praying for blessings, prosperity and well-being for all Cambodians. royal family also sent wishes of health and longevity to the country’s two Supreme Patriarchs.
King Sihamoni and the Queen Mother departed for Beijing on February 27 for routine medical examinations. A royal message dated February 25 announced that Senate President Hun Sen would serve as acting head of state during the King’s absence.
Earlier this month, the palace said the King had temporarily delegated authority to Hun Sen during state visits by Lao and Vietnamese leaders, citing constitutional provisions allowing the monarch to transfer responsibilities when indisposed.
The royal family traditionally travels to China twice a year for medical consultations.
