PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has called for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve its border dispute with Thailand, stressing that military confrontation must be avoided, a government spokesperson said Wednesday.

Government spokesman Pen Bona said the Royal Government’s position remains “clear, firm and unwavering,” emphasizing patience and peaceful settlement.

“The peace oriented stance of the Royal Government of Cambodia is not merely rhetorical, but has been consistently demonstrated through concrete actions,” he said.

Bona noted that Cambodia has facilitated visits by diplomats, international organisations and the ASEAN Observer Team to border areas, enabling them to monitor conditions and meet displaced communities.

He added that diplomatic engagement with Thailand continues, guided by a joint statement issued on December 27, 2025, and international law.

Cambodia has also proposed deploying technical teams under the Joint Boundary Commission to conduct on site measurements and accelerate demarcation. The government insists borders must not be altered by force.

The statement comes as more than 35,000 people remain displaced along the frontier due to security concerns and barriers allegedly erected by Thai forces. Authorities said around 94 percent of the 640,000 displaced have already returned home following coordinated efforts.

Bona said Prime Minister Hun Manet’s government is working to restore livelihoods and ensure safety for affected communities.

Returning residents are receiving support from ministries and local authorities, while those still displaced are being provided with temporary shelter until conditions improve.
