Beijing pledges continued backing for Cambodia’s growth, sovereignty

PHNOM PENH, April 1, 2026 (KPT) – China has reaffirmed its support for Cambodia’s economic development and national security, its ambassador to Phnom Penh said during talks with National Assembly President Samdech Khuon Sudary.
Ambassador Wang Wenbin, paying a courtesy call ahead of the Khmer New Year, said Beijing would stand by Cambodia in safeguarding sovereignty and advancing key national projects.
He voiced confidence in Cambodia’s progress under Prime Minister Hun Manet, citing economic potential and social stability, and pledged ongoing Chinese assistance for growth and defence.
Wang noted that Chinese-funded infrastructure was advancing nationwide, including a Mekong River bridge in Kratie province. The Cambodia–China Friendship Bridge, due to open soon, is billed as a vital link to boost transport and local livelihoods.
China remains one of Cambodia’s largest development partners, providing financial and technical aid across sectors. Phnom Penh has set targets to reach upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income by 2050, stressing peace and stability as prerequisites.
