PHNOM PENH, April 11, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia has officially launched construction of the second section of the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project, a major canal scheme linking the Mekong River system to the sea.

The 151.6-kilometre section runs from Prek Po in Kandal Province to Kep Province on the coast. The inauguration ceremony on Saturday was presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet and attended by Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin.

The wider Funan Techo Canal project will span 172.6 kilometres in total and is being developed in two phases. Officials said the route follows existing natural waterways and historic canal paths dating back to the Funan era.

The project advanced after agreements signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Cambodia in April 2025, including investment and construction contracts under a public-private partnership. China pledged support through grants and loans.

Hun Manet said the canal would strengthen national self-reliance and improve livelihoods, describing it as a key infrastructure development to enhance Cambodia’s independence across land, water and air transport.

Ambassador Wang Wenbin said China remained a “trustworthy partner” for Cambodia, noting Phnom Penh’s support for Beijing on core interests including Taiwan, Xinjiang and Tibet.

He pledged China’s firm backing for Cambodia’s path toward prosperity and cooperation to implement outcomes from Xi’s visit.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol called the launch a significant national achievement, saying the canal would improve transport links between the Mekong River, Tonle Sap Lake and the sea, and support broader economic development.
