PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Interior Ministry has urged motorists returning from Khmer New Year celebrations to drive responsibly, warning against speeding, reckless overtaking and drink-driving as traffic volumes surge nationwide.

Officials called for “ethical driving” and strict compliance with traffic laws, advising drivers to remain patient, avoid aggression and respect right-of-way rules.

The appeal came as thousands travelled back to Phnom Penh and other cities on Friday following the holiday period.

According to the ministry’s deputy spokesperson, 12 accidents were reported on April 16, leaving six people dead and 25 injured.

Fatalities occurred in Svay Rieng, Phnom Penh, Ratanakiri, Pailin and Tboung Khmum, while injuries were recorded in several provinces including Battambang, Oddar Meanchey and Kandal.

Authorities cited speeding, failure to yield, careless turning and mechanical faults among the main causes. Traffic police conducted 116 awareness sessions reaching more than 6,500 people through roadside briefings and community forums.

Prime Minister Hun Manet extended best wishes to citizens returning to work and reiterated calls for road safety. He noted that free public bus services in Phnom Penh continued to operate to ease travel costs and improve safety.

In a separate message, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet described the New Year festivities as peaceful and widely attended, praising traditional games, dance and family gatherings.

He thanked local authorities, ministries and security forces for ensuring an orderly holiday period.
