PHNOM PENH, April 17, 2026 (KPT) – Displaced residents in Cambodia’s northern border provinces joined Khmer New Year celebrations “joyfully” despite ongoing hardship, Senior Minister General Kun Kim said Friday.

Kun Kim, First Vice-President of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said people living in temporary conditions in Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey and Banteay Meanchey provinces were able to take part in events organised by local authorities during the three-day festival.

He noted the celebrations came as the government continued efforts to manage border tensions with Thailand and support affected communities.

During visits to the provinces, Kun Kim met residents and oversaw relief measures, including the distribution of clean water to households facing shortages.

Although living conditions were not the same as before, he said participation in New Year festivities reflected trust in the Royal Government’s leadership.

The minister added that Prime Minister Hun Manet’s administration continued to prioritise the welfare of displaced communities and guide local authorities.

He called for patience over operational challenges, saying efforts would be accelerated after the holiday period to better respond to citizens’ needs.
