Cambodia advances air pollution and waste plan at regional summit

PHNOM PENH, April 27, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth has pushed forward plans to tackle air pollution and waste management during a regional ecological summit in Central Asia.
Sophalleth met Rolph Payet on the sidelines of the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, where Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment proposed a project aimed at preventing air pollution.
The two sides also discussed expanding cooperation to cover solid and plastic waste.
Payet welcomed the initiative and called for further technical talks, expected to take place in Uzbekistan in June.
He also invited Cambodia to upcoming meetings linked to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and the Global Environment Facility.
Sophalleth led Cambodia’s delegation to the summit from April 21–24 at the invitation of Kazakhstan’s ecology minister.
The forum serves as a platform for countries to strengthen collaboration on climate change, environmental protection and ecological challenges.
