PHNOM PENH, April 29, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s defence ministry said Thai forces opened fire during a visit by foreign military attachés to the O’Smach International Border Checkpoint in Oddar Meanchey province, an incident it described as undermining the spirit of the ceasefire agreement.

Spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said five instances of gunfire occurred between 10:35 a.m. and 11:09 a.m., with nine rounds fired from M79 and M16 rifles.

The incident took place during the second annual tour of the Military Attachés Corps in Phnom Penh, which Cambodia had facilitated to allow foreign observers to assess conditions along the frontier following the ceasefire.

The ministry said Cambodia had formally notified the Thai side in advance through the Regional Border Committee, in line with established procedures.

Despite this coordination, gunfire was reported during the observation. Officials said the incident runs counter to commitments made to reduce tensions and maintain peace.

Cambodian forces will continue to monitor the situation and remain vigilant in protecting territorial integrity, the statement added.

The ministry reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully under international law, the ASEAN Charter and bilateral agreements, citing the Joint Statement of the General Border Committee in December 2025 and the Peace Agreement signed in October 2025.

The information was being provided to the public and media to clarify the facts surrounding the incident.
