PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving disputes peacefully after reporting a series of armed incidents along the Thai border, government spokesman Pen Bona said Thursday.

Bona described Cambodia as a law‑abiding and responsible member of the international community, stressing that lasting peace requires respect for international law, the ASEAN Charter and existing treaties.

He said Phnom Penh “deeply regrets” five clashes on April 29, involving nine rounds of fire, including M79 grenades and M16 rifles, allegedly by Thai forces.

The incidents occurred as Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defense hosted a visit by the Military Attaché Corps accredited to Phnom Penh, who were observing conditions at the O’Smach crossing in Oddar Meanchey province following the December 2025 ceasefire.

Bona said prior notification of the visit had been formally sent to Thai counterparts, adding that the reported actions contradicted the spirit of the ceasefire and previous agreements.

Foreign embassies present expressed support for efforts to verify conditions. The British Embassy said it was closely monitoring developments and their impact on communities, while Japan pledged continued backing for ceasefire implementation and humanitarian assistance.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, on an official visit to Brunei after the ASEAN‑EU Ministerial Meeting, reiterated Cambodia’s call for disputes to be resolved peacefully, with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity as essential principles for regional stability.
